Tuition & Fees

The total cost of attendance at Stanford is more than just tuition. There are many non-tuition charges that students are required to pay to attend the university. This article will explain additional costs and include estimated figures based on the current calendar year.

Undergraduate Charges

Undergraduate charges are based on the number of units you enrol in, not the time you spend in class. The more classes you take, the higher your costs will be.

Graduate Charges

Once you decide to pursue your graduate degree at Stanford, you’ll need to know how much it will cost.

The most important thing to remember is that graduate charges are higher than undergraduate charges because of the additional costs associated with getting a degree. To help offset these extra expenses, Stanford offers financial aid packages tailored specifically for graduate students and their situations. In addition to this support system, there are several ways that you can reduce or eliminate certain fees depending on what kind of program you choose:

  • Graduate students have access to lower-cost housing options than undergraduates; however, some programs may require on-campus housing regardless of where they live (e.g., Law).
  • Some departments offer tuition waivers for employees or spouses who work at other colleges within the University system (e.g., Engineering).

Future Tuition Rates

  • Tuition rates are expected to increase by 3-4% per year.
  • Cost of living increases are expected to be about 2% per year.
  • These factors will cause tuition to increase by 5% per year, on average, over the next several years.

Past Tuition Rates

The cost of living has steadily increased over the past few decades. Inflation has also caused tuition rates to rise, but they have increased much faster than inflation. This means that Stanford University students are paying more money now than in previous years for the same quality of education and services.

The total cost of attendance at Stanford is more than just tuition.

You will also pay for room and Board, textbooks and other expenses. The Office of Financial Aid provides an estimated cost of attendance budget that reflects these additional costs and tuition rates based on your year in school and major.
