First-Year Applicants

To apply to Stanford, follow these steps:
Section: 1. Review the admission requirements to Determine if you can apply.
Section: 2. Complete your Common Application or Coalition Application. Complete all areas of the application and submit it by November 1.

Requirements

Stanford requires SAT or ACT scores, a school transcript and two teacher recommendations. The application deadline is rolling; you can apply anytime during the year.

Regular Decision

If you’re applying to Stanford through the Regular Decision process, you must submit your application by December 1. The application fee is $80, but if you are eligible for an application fee waiver (based on financial need), it will be waived for you automatically.

The Stanford supplement includes two short answer questions: “What matters most in your life?” and “What qualities do you think make a successful leader?”

You also have the opportunity to write about any topic of your choice in 500 words or less; this essay should reflect who you are as an individual rather than just describing what happened during high school sports season last year.

Fee Waiver

To apply to Stanford, you must be eligible for a fee waiver. If you are low-income, an international student or an American Indian, you are likely eligible for one of these waivers. To receive a fee waiver from Stanford University:

  • You must have been born in the United States or its territories (the District of Columbia is not considered part of the U.S.).
  • Your parents’ combined annual income must be less than $65,000 (including taxes). If only one parent meets this criterion but lives with another person who earns more than $65k annually, they may still be eligible if their combined income does not exceed $130k per year ($65k + $65k).
  • If neither parent meets this criterion but lives with another person who earns more than $130k annually ($130k), neither can claim financial need; however, both could still qualify for other types of assistance, such as scholarships based on merit rather than need alone.

Required testing

You must submit the SAT or ACT in Writing as a first-year applicant.

You should also take the SAT Subject Tests in at least three chosen areas. We recommend that you take them in at least five areas.

If your high school offers AP exams, University encourages you to challenge yourself by taking as many as possible during your junior year. If your institution offers International Baccalaureate (IB) classes and exams instead of APs or SAT Subject Tests, University will accept these scores; however, this is not required for admission under any circumstances.

Home-Schooled Applicants

Stanford University also welcomes home-schooled applicants. The admission committee requires that you submit the following:

  • A transcript can be an official or unofficial copy of your grades and credits from each institution you attended during high school (including online courses).
  • A letter of recommendation from a teacher who knows you well and has taught you in a classroom setting within the last two years. University also asks for one additional teacher recommendation, so please select someone who has worked closely with you outside of class time (e.g., volunteering together). Please include this letter with your application materials.
  • An additional letter of recommendation from an adult who is familiar with your academic work; this could be another teacher or tutor outside of school hours, but the University is also interested in hearing from parents/guardians, coaches/mentors at extracurricular activities., so long as they have observed academic success firsthand!
